Hardware
| Minimum requirements | Recommended requirements |
CPU | Dual CPU/Dual-core CPU | 8 CPUs/cores |
Memory (RAM) | 4GB RAM | 16GB RAM |
Disk* | 10GB free disk space | 40GB free disk space |
* Recommended disk space varies and depends on the size of the environment and the retention time required for connection data. In order to increase the disk space of the ova file, see the following guide: How to increase the size of the database disk on the Faddom virtual appliance?
Software
To deploy the Faddom ova file, vCenter version 6.0 or higher is required. If you are using version 5.5 of vCenter, please see our guide here: How to deploy Faddom on vCenter version 5.5
To perform the automated configuration of vCenter for capturing network traffic, vCenter version 6.5 or up is required. If you are using an older version of vCenter, you can still perform the configuration manually or using a powershell script. For details, see one of the following:
Permissions
While permissions to access the vCenter server are not required, it is highly recommended to provide Faddom with a user to access vCenter. The details on the required permissions can be found here:
Firewall Rules
While Faddom does not need access to your servers, some firewall rules may need to be defined to allow Faddom to access vCenter or to collect network traffic. For details, see here:
Deployment
To deploy the Faddom ova template, see the VMware documentation on deploying a VM template: Deploy an OVF or OVA Template
The template requires some additional configuration in the final deployment screen:
Here you set the root password for console access to the server.
It is also recommended to set a static IP address to use to access the UI after deployment. If this is left blank, the server will attempt to use DHCP to configure an IP address.
Configuration
Login
After deploying the ova file, you should be able to access the Faddom UI using the IP address that you entered during the deployment.
You will need to set an initial password for the internal Administrator user and then you can use that user to login to the UI. Additional users can be created later from the UI under Settings -> Access Control.
License Activation
After logging in, you will need to activate your license. See here for details: Activate Your License
Network Traffic Collection
Once the license is installed, you can configure traffic collection for your VMware environment. See details here: Setting up network traffic collection in VMware
Software Updates
To update the version of the Faddom software, please see the following guide:
The Faddom server is base on CentOS version 7 and you can perform standard Linux software updates using the yum package manager and the command:
yum update
Also, if required, you can update the version of the Tomcat server that is running Faddom using the following guide:
